Admissions

What type of children are we looking for?

Many types of children do well at The Little School. We believe that a diverse student population enriches the learning opportunities for all. We seek students who:

  • Will thrive in a learning environment that is flexible and responsive to individual abilities, interests, and needs

  • Demonstrate curiosity, creativity, and interest

  • Have the capacity for responsible choice making and working respectfully and cooperatively with others

  • Are part of a family that will support our non-traditional approach to teaching and learning

What factors determine a child's admittance?

Admissions decisions are made based on a variety of factors; applications are reviewed in light of the specific openings available. In this process we seek to balance individual and group needs. Our goal is to create within each classroom, a community of students of overlapping but compatible ages and abilities - a safe, secure, and stimulating environment within which each child will risk and grow.

As part of this process, the following factors are considered:

  • Number of openings at a particular age level

  • Gender balance in each classroom

  • Individual development in the social, emotional, and cognitive realms

  • Special individual needs (e.g., social, emotional, health-related)

  • Diversity support/balance

  • Older/younger positioning within the class
