The Little School seeks a Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) to join our leadership team and help shape the future of our vibrant learning community.

What We’re Looking For

- 10+ years of financial leadership experience, ideally in nonprofit or education settings.
- Expertise in nonprofit accounting, budgeting, and compliance.
- Strong supervisory experience and ability to lead cross-functional teams.
- A commitment to collaboration and learning in service of the school.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and QuickBooks Online. Experience with Blackbaud a plus.

Position Summary
The Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) is a strategic and operational leader responsible for overseeing The Little School’s financial management, human resources, facilities, risk management, and technology infrastructure. Reporting directly to the Head of School, the DFO ensures long-term financial sustainability and operational excellence. As a key member of the leadership team, the DFO actively participates in Board of Trustees committees, including the Finance Committee, and contributes to strategic planning and institutional decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Lead all accounting functions: accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations.
- Prepare and present monthly financial reports to the Head of the School and Finance Committee.
- Manage cash flow and allocations between operating and investment accounts.
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting, including quarterly loan covenant reports.
- Oversee capital project budgets and construction-related financials.
- Monitor investments and liaise with investment firms to support strategic growth.
- Partner with Development, Enrollment, and Auxiliary Programs to align revenue strategies.
Budgeting & Strategic Planning
- Develop and maintain the annual budget in collaboration with school leadership.
- Provide budget-to-actual reporting and long-range financial planning insights.
- Support strategic planning efforts with leadership and board committees.
Audit, Tax, and Compliance
- Manage classification of restricted and unrestricted assets.
- Ensure timely and accurate filing of IRS forms 990 and 5500.
- Coordinate annual independent audits and address findings.
- Maintain compliance with regulatory bodies and renew memberships.
Operations Oversight
Human Resources
- Supervise HR functions including onboarding, personnel files, and employment agreements.
- Collaborate on compensation and benefits evaluations.
- Maintain and update the employee handbook.
- Ensure compliance with employment laws and health/safety regulations.
Risk Management
- Work with insurance brokers to maintain comprehensive and cost-effective coverage.
- Oversee safety and security protocols for facilities and technology infrastructure.
Technology & Facilities
- Supervise the Technology Manager and Director of Facilities.
- Ensure effective management of physical and digital assets.
Team Leadership
- Directly supervise the Bookkeeper, HR Manager, Director of Facilities, and Technology Manager.
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and mission-aligned team culture.
Community Engagement
- Participate in school events and daily life.
- Build positive relationships with colleagues, families, and students.
- Align operational decisions with the school’s mission and vision.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, or related field; MBA, MPA or CPA preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years in financial leadership, ideally in nonprofit or educational settings.
- Experience with fundraising support, commercial banking, and loan operations.
- Proven supervisory and team leadership experience.
- Experience with educational billing systems, such as Blackbaud, including integration with broader accounting and reporting workflows.

Equity Fellowship Program
Supporting Diverse Educators at The Little School in Partnership with POCIS Seattle
Full-time Associate Teaching Position and Teaching Certification Scholarship
Applications due: March 15, 2026
The Little School offers a full-time teaching associate job and up to $10,000 each year toward tuition for an aspiring BIPOC educator enrolled in an accredited teaching certification and master’s program.
As student teaching becomes part of the candidate’s program, The Little School will work with the accrediting college to support student teaching at The Little School. The fellow will work with a mentor teacher and experienced teaching team. Other opportunities include observations of other classrooms and mentoring and support throughout the program.
Fellowship requirements/steps to become a Fellow at The Little School:
- Identify as a person of color
- Enroll in a 1-year teacher certification program that requires a full-time student teaching experience at UW, SPU, or through Moreland University
- Option: Enroll in a 2nd year program to complete your master's degree

Fellowship Components:
- Mentorship and professional development

- The school will provide the fellow with up to $10,000 in tuition funds per year not to exceed two years. If the fellow’s chosen program costs less than $10,000 in either year, the school will provide up to the amount of the cost of the program. Employment and Fellowship agreements are year-long and subject to renewal by the school each year.

Summer Camp Counselor

Mandatory Training: Wednesday, June 17th & Thursday, June 18th—8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Camp Information: Our summer program is looking for camp counselors to join our eight weeks of themed, fun, and interactive programming! Campers range in age from 3 to 11 and are divided into four age groups: 3–4-year-olds, 5–6-year-olds, 7–9-year-olds, and 10–11-year-olds.
We seek candidates who will help campers explore our amazing campus, organize games, cook with students, create crafting projects, and implement weekly themes. Candidates should be flexible, think on their feet, and have a “go with the flow” mentality.
Camp Counselor Roles:

Lead Counselor (Full-time): A Lead Counselor has a high-school diploma and experience working with kids. Ideally, this candidate is also seeking a higher degree related to early childhood education.

Associate Counselor (Full-time): An Associate Counselor is going into their Junior or Senior year in High School and has a passion for working with kids. Bonus if you have previous work experience with kids.

Jr. Counselor (Part-time): A Jr. Counselor is an opportunity for Little School alumni only. Looking to gain some hands-on experience and come back to TLS for more adventures? This may be the right job for you this summer! If you are 15 and above, you may apply to work at Summer Camp. Jr. Counselors are expected to follow the same application procedures as all other candidates. Applicants under the age of 18 must complete a Parent Authorization for Summer Work form.

Aftercare Counselor (Part-time): An Aftercare Counselor works in our aftercare summer camp program specifically from 3:00-6:00 p.m.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise and ensure the safety of all campers.
- Greet campers and assist with arrival and dismissal procedures.
- Serve as the leader for one cohort of campers.
- Assist in planning, preparing, and implementing daily activities and lessons.
- Maintain a healthy, fun, and structured classroom environment.
- Keep camp classrooms and the school playground tidy and organized.
- Serve as a role model for campers.

A lead educator in our after-school program, designing and facilitating engaging, developmentally appropriate activities for children ages 3–11.
