Big Future Update
It’s been a busy fall on The Little School campus. As children have played, connected, explored and discovered daily in our wooded canopy, our construction team has been hard at work preparing the campus for its new building. Here are some of the many accomplishments that have been occurring “behind the construction fences!”
Clearing and grading: To make way for our new building and parking, thousands of tons of earth have been moved and leveled. Structural fill has been trucked in to replace instable, “silty” soil. This ensures that our building is constructed on stable, consistent ground.
Installation of our storm water vault: Near the school’s original entrance is a large hole in which work is happening daily to build a giant storm water vault. This vault will treat the campus’ storm water, taking it back to pre-forest conditions before it runs into the City’s water system. The large piles of dirt being held on site contain clean, dry fill that will be used to fill the ground around the vault once installation is complete. This soil will also be used as the building is constructed.
Installation and connection of utilities: Because the school has many existing buildings, connecting utilities for those buildings to the utility lines for the new building is necessary before construction of the new multipurpose building can commence. These new utility pathways for water, sewer, electric, gas and storm water have been trenched and will be connected to the City’s systems over Winter Break.
Continued work in existing buildings: Over the weekends, Thanksgiving Break and our upcoming Winter Break, crews continue to wrap up the refurbishments on Meadows, Woods and Cedars. When we return from the holidays, we will have new counters and storage in all three buildings, interior painting will be complete and permanent bathroom partitions will be installed.
What’s next!?!? This winter and spring, we will get to watch the building rise out of the earth! Footing for the building is scheduled to begin in January, and temporary parking is still on schedule to open in early spring. Next summer, we will gather to celebrate the building’s opening! In the meantime, we’ll continue to partner with Bayley to bring the construction work to life for our students.
Building Big Futures Together
More than 100 donors have already stepped forward and helped us raised over $3.3 million for the Campaign for a Big Future. Thank you so much!
This campaign is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to realize the vision of our founder, Eleanor Siegl, to enhance our progressive education program and provide a space for our community to come together as never before. In order to be more fiscally responsible, The Little School Board of Trustees made the decision to raise funds for this project at the same time construction crews update our classroom buildings and work on the new multipurpose building. With this approach, the school is saving money on construction costs but is more dependent on our families to come forward with thoughtfulness and generosity that will benefit not only our current students, but future generations of TLS students as well!
Unlike gifts to the Annual Fund that support the current year operating budget, gifts and pledges to the Campaign for a Big Future have a bigger scope. With the Campaign for a Big Future, you have a menu of options to choose from:
- Payment schedule: one time, monthly, quarterly, annually or varied
- Payment method: cash, check, stock, credit card, donor-advised funds or other means

Matches for Impact
You can grow the impact of your support for the Campaign for a Big Future by taking advantage of one of the matching opportunities available to our community.
Employer match: If you work for a company that matches donations, such as Microsoft, Boeing, T-Mobile or Google, you can increase the amount of your gift and your impact.
Alum community match: If you are a TLS alum, the parent/guardian or grandparent of one, or former TLS faculty or staff member, this is for you! An alumni family has generously agreed to match the first $5,000 on gifts of $5,000 and above. A limited number of matches are available, so act quickly.
Big impact match: Another TLS family is offering to match the first $25,000 on gifts made at $25,000 and above. Just a few of these matches remain, so make your gift now to leverage this extra support for TLS.
Are you finding yourself unsure about the difference between the Annual Fund and the Campaign for a Big Future? You're not alone. The Annual Fund is our annual fund raising effort that goes to support the current year's operating budget. It provides for things like faculty salaries, classroom supplies, financial aid and all the things it takes to operate the school day to day. The Campaign for a Big Future is the endeavor that is raising funds specifically for the campus reconfiguration and construction of the new multipurpose building. These funds are essential for making this bold project a reality and ensuring the health of The Little School for decades to come. More details can be found in this FAQ, or feel free to reach out to Becky Dolan to learn more.
