The Little School’s Environmental Education program fosters meaningful connections between children and the natural world that inspire lifelong commitments to community and environmental stewardship. This program nurtures the joy and wonder that young learners bring to learning about nature while encouraging students to recognize their role as caretakers of human and natural communities. By encouraging stewardship of our local socio-ecological systems, students are empowered to see themselves as leaders for positive change in their own communities and beyond.
Our forest and gardens provide a living lab for historical, anthropological and cultural study as well as biology, ecology, botany, zoology, meteorology and climatology. Though our students’ natural curiosity, observations and questions guide many of our investigations, the natural cycle of the seasons also offer ever-changing opportunities to expand our understanding of the natural world.
